The background of this symposium based on Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and the Paris agreement- the two landmark agreement’s which was formally adopted by the UN General Assembly and UNFCCC COP21 in 2015. In this regard, it is important to verify the major steps taken by national and regional governments in meeting the global commitment especially on climate change, waste management, biodiversity, environmental risks and social well-being of the society in general. Though the international commitments provide a framework for national and regional governments to develop national and regional plans incorporating the needs of sustainable development and the Paris Agreement, there are several impeding factors or challenges in implementing such action plans.

As a step towards understanding and addressing these problems, National Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES) initiated a Forum on Sustainable Future in Asia in collaboration with Asian Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo. The purpose of the forum was to understand the institutional architecture and policy framework in order to help mankind leapfrog towards the sustainable future. The forum attracted several scholars and practitioners from ASIA and a joint statement was also released highlighting the needs for identifying institutional architecture and policy frameworks that can help mankind leapfrog towards the sustainable future. The important of the role of knowledge networks and institutional support mechanism for trans-boundary was also highlighted. It was also realized that for meeting global commitments, the need for local action is imperative and scientist and practitioners working at the local level has to be engaged in discussions at the global level.
